Tourism

Tourism greatly contributes to the city’s economy, thanks to the climate, mild for most of the year, and to the position of city: Salerno in fact is a kind of link between the Amalfi coast in the west and Paestum and the coast of Cilento in the south. Not far from the town also Padula and the National Park of Cilento are worth a visit. The tourists are mostly from northern Europe and north America.

The most interesting places in town are the Norman Cathedral; the Roman aqueduct; the historical city district and the ancient Via Mercanti (Merchants street) with its shops dealing in typically local crafts products; the beautiful sea-front, which stretches for about 5 kilometres and is lined with gardens and palms; the public park, which contains a botanic garden rich in flowers from all over the world. The beach of Salerno is 7 kilometres long, equally divided among private lidos and free beaches.
