Magna Graecia

The excursion to Paestum is a unique chance to see the best preserved Greek Temples in the world and the only existing examples of ancient Greek wall paintings, the most famous of which is the Diver's Tomb.
Paestum is the Roman name of the ancient colony of Posidonia, founded around 600 b.C. by Greeks coming from Sybaris, another colony in the south of Italy (the Magna Graecia).
The excursion will start at 8,30 a.m. with the transfer (by bus) from Salerno to Paestum (40 minutes). The first stop will be the archaeological area: three exceptionally well preserved examples of Greek temples in doric style will astonish and fascinate the visitors with their grandeur and majesty. The group will visit also the National Archaeological Museum, keeping unique examples of Greek frescoes, the metopes (bas-reliefs) from the near temple of Hera at the mouth of Sele river, and remains dating back to the times of the Greek colony and then of the Roman city.
After a quick visit of the early Christian basilica the first part of the visit will finish and the participants will then have a quick lunch tasting one of the most famous and typical products of Italian cuisine: mozzarella and all the other dairy products made with buffalo cheese. Paestum in fact is world famous not only because of its temples, but also because it is one of the few little areas in Campania where the real and original mozzarella comes from. The excursion will end with a visit of a water buffalo farm.
The return to Salerno is scheduled at 2,00 p.m..
