A word from the Tournament Director

Dear Rotarian friends,

I’m writing this quick note to let you know that here in Salerno many Rotarians and Rotaractors from all the clubs in town are working hard to prepare the best programme and to welcome you in true Rotarian spirit!

The attention on our event is growing fast, as we can realise from the thousands of visits on the website www.rotarytennis.org and from many contacts from any corner of the world.

Even though we would love to welcome hundreds of participants and guests, there is a limited availability of places which will oblige us to adopt the rule first come first served.

So please take a minute to fill in the on line registration form to be sure to participate this unique event for Rotarian tennis players.

The promotional package and the special tariffs offered by the hotels are valid only for bookings placed before the entry deadline, which is July, 9 2007, 10,00 a.m. (Italy time)

Anybody needing assistance or an invitation to obtain the visa can contact me on info@rotarytennis.org .

It’s only 72 days to the start of the III ITFR World Championship, don’t miss it!

Kind regards

Marco Marinaro

President of Organising Committee ITFR WTC 2007

A glance at the town

Salerno: a beautiful and lively city by the Tirrenian Sea, close to the wonderful Amalfi Coast, to the amazing greek temples of Paestum and to the fabulous ruins of the roman city of Pompeii.

Come and discover the various faces of a city both ancient and modern: first an Etruscan village, then a roman colony from in the first century b.C. with the name of Salernum till the coming of the Lombards in the VIIth century a.C., when it became the capital of the Langobardia Minor, surviving for two centuries after the collapse of the Langobardia Maior conquered by Charlemagne. In the eleventh century the city was besieged and then conquered by the Norman prince Roberto il Guiscardo (Robert the Astute) …. The official hotel: Grand Hotel Salerno

The seat of the Tournament Director and the venue of most of the activities during the Championship is Grand Hotel Salerno, just 100 mt from the “Dininno Tennis Centre” and at walking distance from the city centre, the tourist port and the railway station.

The Grand Hotel Salerno (4,000 sq.mt) is the result of a state-of-the-art project of the famous Italian architect Nicola Pagliara … (Click here to continue) [ www.grandhotelsalerno.it ].

The mission of the tournament: Africa Project

According to the objectives of the International Tennis Fellowship of Rotarians, tennis is also a mean to serve the community and humanity, therefore the events organised by ITFR have also an humanitarian mission. In this case the mission of the tournament is supporting a service project promoted by Rotary Club Salerno since 2001, whose aim is to contribute to the education of a new generation of medical doctors currently studying at the School of Medicine of the University of Gulu, Northern Uganda. The funds raised with the tournament will be spent for a specific purpose: purchasing the equipment for a so called “Medilab”, a learning laboratory for the students … (Click here to continue) inserisci link a http://www.rotarytennis.org/eng/index.php?mns=2

The Amalfi Coast: Kennen Sie das Land wo die Zitronen blühen …

The social programme of the tournament of course includes several excursions that will be presented in this section of the newsletter.

The excursion to the Amalfi Coast (so called “Saracens’ Coast”) will start with the transfer by ferry from Salerno to Amalfi (35 minutes) to enable the participants to enjoy the wonderful view of the coast by the sea. Then the group will visit Amalfi: the cathedral dedicated to S. Andrew, the crypt, the Paradise Cloister and the medieval dockyards; afterwards a pleasant walk through the ancient whitewashed alleys will lead the participants in the heart of the village till the Mills’ Valley, where they will able to visit the Paper Museum, the old paper mills (producing the typical and very precious “Amalfi paper”) and the iron-foundries.

After a lunch with typical dishes in Pogerola, a beautiful hamlet on the slopes, the group will reach Ravello …

Amalfi, the Sea Republic

No wonder that this magnificent piece of coast bears the name of this village: Amalfi is doubtlessly the most important centre and, we should add, it is since over 1000 years ago.

Amalfi flourished in Middle Age, thanks to the initiative and the courage of its tradesmen, who boldly ventured to Asia Minor and to Africa to buy luxury goods to be sold in the markets of all the south of Italy and the rest of the peninsula. Amalfi’s merchants warehouses were in every important harbour of the Mediterranean Sea … (Click here to continue) link http://www.rotarytennis.org/eng/notizie.php?a=d&i=77

Ravello, the city of music

Ravello is one of the most ancient villages in the Amalfi coast: it was founded in the VI century by aristocratic roman families who wanted to find shelter from Saracens and barbarians who ravaged the coast. It lays on a spur 350 meters above the sea, so dominating the sea and enjoying a wonderful view over the coast. The village reached splendour in XIII century thanks to the flourishing trades the merchants made with the Eastern Mediterranean through Amalfi ….
