The Port

The port of Salerno is one of the busiest in the Tyrrhenian Sea. It handles about 7 million tons of goods per year, 60% of which are containers.

Most of the transports are made by container ships and “Ro-Ro”. Container ships serve mainly on long distances, in particular to and from Australia, New Zealand, the Far East, North Europe, Central, North and South America and west Africa. Ro-Ro ships (transporting trailers, trucks, cars, etc.) instead serve short journeys in the circuit known as “sea highways”: the main highways are to and from Malta, Tunis, Palermo, Messina and Olbia.

The passenger service is handled mainly by the same Ro-Ro ships that travel on the above mentioned sea highways on a daily basis. Holiday cruisers’ traffic is also increasing. A harbour station (designed by the world famous architect Zaha Hadid) is being built to serve this purpose.
